Popup-Books

Chuck Fischer entered the rarified world of illustrated pop-up books with the publication of his first book, Great American Houses and Gardens in 2002.Subsequently, Fischer has had six pop-up books published and has established himself one of Americas leading pop-up book creators . Fischer was recently asked by Smithsonian Institution Libraries to host a video along with his frequent collaborator, paper engineer Bruce Foster, to demonstrate how pop-up books are created. The video is part of the exhibition Fold, Pull, Pop, and Turn at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History in Washington D.C.

In the breathtaking ANGELS: A Pop-Up Book, Chuck Fischer brings to life the most captivating stories of these celestial beings. Fischer’s original art is inspired by classic images from art history and is crafted into astoundingly intricate pop-ups made in collaboration with master paper engineer Bruce Foster.

ANGELS is divided into three sections: Messengers, A Hierarchy of Angels, and Secular Angels. More than one hundred original illustrations fill the pages of this book, featuring angels from cultures and traditions around the world dancing to life in three-dimensional tableaux and movable parts. The book is brimming with full-color images and narrative booklets that tell the stories of the most fascinating and well-known angels of ancient and contemporary myths and legends. Angels inspire people year-round, but perhaps most so during the holiday season, when carols and cards highlight the role of these heavenly messengers. Much like Fischer’s previous pop-up books, ANGELS evokes awe and wonder in readers, and makes a perfect gift for all ages and faiths. Paper Engineering by Bruce Foster

RARELY HAS THE BOOK OF GENESIS inspired such artistic innovation and creativity as it has in this dynamic and elaborate pop up book. Renowned pop-up book artist Chuck Fischer was inspired to create In the Beginning: THE ART OF GENESIS when he came across a first edition copy of The Golden Children’s Bible, a book with pictures and biblical text.

After studying the text, Fischer was inspired to illustrate the iconic stories of the first chapter of the Bible, through the magic of pop-up creations, giving three-dimensional height, depth and breadth to these time-honored stories. In the Beginning: THE ART OF GENESIS features Fischer’s original artwork and the structural designs of master paper Together they have created eye-catching spreads that include a medieval-inspired Garden of Eden, a graphic depiction of Noah’s Ark, and a stunningly tall Tower of Babel standing 24 inches off the page. Each pop-up is enhanced with narrative booklets recounting beloved stories from the book of Genesis, pull-outs with biblical verses, and flaps that re-create famous religious paintings.
